TALE OF THE BARS

He looks down in disappointment
As the sounds of chains render the air
He has no tears to cry
His mouth left so dry
He prays for life after here,
A life beyond these bars

He was fire when free
Now confined amid fire
Treatment by wardens
The cold on the floor
Everyday to him a nightmare
The bars can't spare him

At dawn or dusk
Sleep he can't find
Cries of other inmates
The stench spares him neither
His head is full of thoughts
Of friends he will never see
Even beyond the bars
Those that went by the bullets

He hears his son's cry from miles away
His hope is fading away
He whispers a prayer for a way
As a tear of pain drops from his eye
He wishes the bars could have an ear
For a minute to pave a way
He thought the stay would be better
But now he can't even sit down.
