Once A Soldier Always A Soldier

At first I liked,
It was more than enjoyable,
Having that thing on my shoulder,
Passing through the forest,
Not scared at all,
My destiny I had reached.

Many salutes I received,
My colleagues to me they bowed,
Boss said I was the best,
Therefore on the mission I was sent,
To attack the opponent.

My first time it was,
Never had any clue how it was,
Truly scared but didn't show,
Boss had yelled,
Our mission was the king.

In the cold I slept,
As my eyes slowly wept,
My shoulders aching,
My gun now tiresome,
Nobody to keep me company,
Wild beasts became my friends.

My family I longed,
My spouse I missed,
The smiles of my kids slowly fading away,
All I could do was to say a silent prayer,
And hope all would be well,
As we struggled in the jungle.

Junk food we ate,
Other days slept hungry,
No warm showers or clothes to change,
We could rub our faces with bitter saliva,
Nobody cared for us,
Not even the one who sent us.

We lived by the bullet,
Every moment it was gunshots,
Many lost their lives,
Their carcasses lay helplessly in the forest,
Everybody with his own god,
Wishing they could retreat.

The situation was more than worse,
Attackers attacking at an unexpected time,
We stood for our nation,
To guard those who never cared,
To bring peace with a bullet,
A sign of solidarity.
Once a soldier always a soldier.
