Tonight the moon will hide
Behind a curtain of dotted stars.
With shame it will not shine;
It will shut those eyes that give light
And guide it's path in absence of the sun.
Eyes that have gazed upon us,
The same that have shone our paths with grey grace.
Eyes that have seen acts of kindness
And shone on evils that devour sanity.
It will hide in shame,
For it has shone on men
As they plucked life and innocence from the weak,
It has lit the way for women
As they marched on to pluck hope and futures
From men who taught them love.
It will hide in shame,
For in its quest for perfection
It hid its back from us,
It showed us its best face,
It taught us applied perfection
And denial of our lesser selves.
Tonight the moon won't shine,
Wolves won't howl,
Stars will twinkle like fairy pixie dust,
And paint smiles on the black canvas we call 'night sky'.
Lovers will lock hands and gaze to the skies,
So full yet so empty,
They will point to Scorpius
And tell tales of Antares and Orion.
Birds will lie in silence.
Fish will swim in fear of dropping in Hades below.
Ants and tides will take a break.
Daughters will sleep to a dark sky
Tonight, the moon won't shine.
